How to pay no mind to the rantings and ravings of the mind

It has only taken 4000 years, but Western medicine is finally catching up with the East and embracing the healing power of mindfulness

It has only taken 4000 years, but Western medicine is finally catching up with the East and embracing the healing power of mindfulness, writes Nicole Brady. Mindful meditation at Fountain Gate Primary School. Photo: Ken Irwin

VIRTUALLY overnight, mindfulness has hit the mainstream. Once a niche therapeutic tool, it is now taught to athletes, primary school students, cancer patients, the anorexic, the obese, corporate lawyers, prisoners, bankers and medical undergraduates. In short: anyone and everyone.

The truth about mindfulness is that its proponents have been spreading the word for a long time. Thousands of years, in fact. But as Western science has started endorsing many of the techniques of Eastern orthodoxies, mindfulness has crossed over from fad to commonplace. Vipassana meditation

Vipassana is an ancient technique of meditation, originating in India more than 2500 years ago, that is now taught in many locations around the world. There are numerous Centers in India and elsewhere in Asia/Pacific; ten Centers in North America; three Centers in Latin America; eight Centers in Europe; seven Centers in Australia/New Zealand; one Center in the Middle East and one Center in Africa. It is even taught in a number of prisons around the world.

Vipassana is taught as a silent 10 day live-in course initially and has a very strict schedule of meditation, eating and sleeping. Once you have completed a 10 day course you are then able to do further 3 day courses and it is recommended you repeat the 10 day course at least once a year. For more dedicated meditators the course is also run as 30 days in some centres.

The Basics of Meditation

Meditation refers to a state where your body and mind are consciously relaxed and focused. Practitioners of this art report increased awareness, focus, and concentration, as well as a more positive outlook in life.

Meditation is most commonly associated with monks, mystics and other spiritual disciplines. However, you don’t have to be a monk or mystic to enjoy its benefits. And you don’t even have to be in a special place to practice it. You could even try it in your own living room!

What is Meditation?

Meditation is not simply a process of reflection or contemplation, nor is it mere daydreaming or relaxation. Meditation is a technique or practice that involves training your attention and mental awareness and bringing your mental focus under control.

Meditation isn’t easy. It takes time, energy and effort, concentration, determination and discipline. To be a successful meditator you will need these personal qualities but the results you will experience in your everyday life will be worthwhile and this is why so many people persevere. Although it is easier to just sit back and watch television, this will not allow you to get rid of the feelings of unease and unrest experienced by so many people in today’s rushed societies. These feelings may go away for periods of time but unless they are dealt with they will always come back. Continue reading “What is Meditation?”
